London Business School's Africa Day This Weekend



On Saturday, 17 May 2008, the Africa Club at London Business School will host its 7th annual Africa Day Conference. Africa Day is a leading African conference in Europe, providing a compelling platform for intellectual exchange and debate around some of the continent’s most critical issues. The conference supports the School's vision to be the pre-eminent global business school, by bringing together some of the best minds and practitioners in African business to help inspire a socio-economic renaissance in Africa. The Nigerian DJs Conference in Atlanta (June 6th - 7th, 2008)



The 2nd annual Naija DJs conference will be held in Atlanta this year. The aim is to provide a meeting-place for Nigerian DJs and Artistes to exchanges ideas on how to better promote the Nigerian music movement. The conference consists of a welcome party, DJ /Artist Seminar and DJ ShowDown / Artist Concert.

Verdict = The video is not a real music video, it's more of shots of them recording in the studio which I am not keen on these days so I've added another Asa [Asha] video for her song titled "Fire on the Mountain". She's so talented.

I must confess I have not necessarily been following The U.S. Election especially as it was Super Tuesday yesterday (see link). Unlike my fellow friends and relatives, I just catch a glimpse of updates every now and then. I am backing Obama though and I really like this video - of course because there is a lot of celeb dropping (re: name dropping) - the likes of Tatyana Ali, Scarlett Johansson, Will.I.Am, John Legend, Common, Nicole Scherzinger, Tracee Ellis Ross etc. Go Obama! YES WE CAN! P.S. Why did Nick Cannon look like he didn't want to be there?

Super Tuesday is still going on for those who are not following and Hillary Clinton and John McCain won votes in California while Barack Obama leads with 13 states alongside McCain (in a tie).

Speaking of special days, fellow blogger Lil Mama sent me this flyer for an alternative First Fridays to attend rather than the so called "stiff" First Fridays event in Lagos. Lol.

If you are in Lagos still try and go for the event sha and see for yourself.

Nigeria booted out of the Africa Nations Cup by Ghana 10

Very sad.....like someone said: To go down in the quarters is gutting, to go down in the quarters after scoring only 3 goals all tournament is quite irritating (only 2 from open play). To go down in the quarters to 10 men is humiliating to say the least.To go down to a 10 man Ghanaian team... nuf said.

Yep we we lost to Ghana yesterday with only 10 men playing in their own team. Let's hope we can redeem ourselves in future matches to come - but this was a big deal, a whole Nations Cup.

The Niger Delta

Everybody has heard or read about the conflicts and issues in the Niger Delta region including militants, gunmen and kidnappings. It is so bad that now Nigerians even joke about how much the ransom could be for their Non-Nigerian friends if they were kidnapped! Of course this is meant to be light hearted humour but from a serious point of view, we have never been a terrorist country per se and that is what Nigeria is becoming. Such stories put expats off Nigeria.

For those who love reading, I found the most detailed and articulate article on the Niger Delta titled - Curse of The Black Gold Hope and Betrayal in The Niger Delta


The following video (watch here) shows residents of Port Harcourt walking on the streets with their arms raised as ordered by the Security Forces - this was back in August.

Farafina is pleased to announce the release of its latest book The Phoenix by Chika Unigwe.

Chika Unigwe is an Afro-Belgian writer of Nigerian origin. She is the author of fiction, poetry, articles and educational material. The Phoenix is her first full length novel. It was originally published in Dutch.Chika Unigwe was born in Enugu, Nigeria, and now lives in Turnhout, Belgium, with her husband and four children.She holds a BA in English Language and Literature from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and an MA from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. She also holds a PhD from the University of Leiden, The Netherlands, having completed a thesis entitled "In the shadow of Ala. Igbo women writing as an act of righting" in 2004.
